A friend of mine put me onto Joomla at the weekend as a possible existing solution that I could use to power the back end editor for Kryptonite Dove.
Joomla is an open source CMS that boasts a 2.7 percent usage statistic across the web. After looking at the features this weekend, I wondered how easy it would be to install Joomla and use it for editing my content which is something I never really got around to finishing in the first incarnation of this site and haven't in the past put a lot of stock in it.
However no editor has held me back in the past when wanting to make posts and edit content so I thought I would give it a go. I downloaded the 1.7 Full package and uploaded the unpacked content to my site.
Setting up Joomla 1.7 is really very easy, and if you have the inclination but not necessarily the knowledge to create a website I would seriously look at this option over wordpress or any of the others on the market. Just navigate to the directory you uploaded the unpacked files to, this will load the installation scripts which take you step by step through everything you need.
I got a 403 Forbidden error when attempting this, if you're seeing a similar thing you need to change the directory permissions to 777 and reload the page in your browser. Once installation is complete I would recommend manually deleting the installation folder rather than using the button on the step-by-step and unless you're completely new to this kind of thing don't install any default example content. It creates a lot of data visible in your site files and if like me you only intend to use Joomla's CMS for the back end editing you don't need it.
Once installed it was actually quite easy to change my functions and point the pages to new tables in the database. Obviously now my pages can display as much or as little of the content stored through Joomla as I choose and this is a limitation to an extend, but if you don't want to spend a lot of time writing custom solutions this is a great quick fix.
